Nostalgia continues to be a big draw in Hollywood, with multiple movies and TV series serving to transport viewers back to beloved prior decades. When it comes to reliving the 1980s, no show does it better than Netflix’s hugely popular Stranger Things.
Stranger Things season 3 premieres July 4th, but in the meantime, a pretty amusing, albeit quite odd product tie-in is set to happen in honor of the Netflix hit. As reported by Variety, Coca-Cola will bring back infamous 1980s dud New Coke for a limited time.
Stranger Things season 3 is set in the summer of 1985, which would place it just after New Coke’s debut. For those too young to remember, New Coke went on to be a huge failure, leading Coca-Cola to pretty quickly bring back its classic formula and taste.
Beginning June 3rd, Coca-Cola will begin shipping about 500,000 cans of New Coke, available as part of a Stranger Things-themed package at cokestore.com/1985/. Pre-orders can be made now, and it’ll be interesting to see how fast they end up selling out.
This marketing partnership materialized after Netflix learned of the Duffer Brothers’ plan to work New Coke into season 3’s story. As another fun bit, Stranger Things’ cast has recreated an old commercial for New Coke, which will soon play in movie theaters.
