Iconic Actor Christopher Plummer has Died at 91

Published

Christopher Plummer

Veteran actor Christopher Plummer who famously played Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music has died. He was 91 years old.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, his mother was the secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University and his father sold securities and stocks. His great-grandfather was the third Prime Minister of Canada, John Abbott, who served from 1891 to 1892.

Plummer began his career as an actor on the radio before making his professional stage debut in New York in 1954. He would go on to win numerous awards for his work on the stage including two Tony Awards. Remarkably, he became the oldest actor to win an Oscar at the age of 82 for the film Beginners.

In a storied career that lasted more than seven decades, Plummer, like many classically-trained actors, would occasionally dip his toe into the genre space bringing the weight of his talent and presence to films that otherwise might go unnoticed by non-genre fans.

Christopher Plummer as Abraham Van Helsing in Dracula 2000

The actor took on the role of Professor Paris Catalano in 1988’s Vampire in Venice and would later appear as Dr. Abraham Van Helsing in Dracula 2000 and Monsignor Orelas opposite Paul Bettany in Priest. Between 2015 and 2018, he provided the voice for Dr. West in the animated Howard Lovecraft films, and most recently, he stole the show as Harlan Thrombey, the patriarch of the Thrombey family whose murder lies at the center of Knives Out.

Plummer had a quality about him that commanded an audience’s attention, and a tenacity that made him the perfect foil for Kathy Bates in Dolores Claiborne. The scenes where he accuses her again and again of killing her husband and her employer are some of the most breathtaking in that film.

Christopher Plummer is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine Taylor, and his daughter, the actress Amanda Plummer, who he had from a previous marriage to Tammy Grimes.

iHorror sends our condolences to the friends and family of Christopher Plummer.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
