Scripted found-footage horror podcast Archive 81 has been picked up by Netflix for development as an eight-part series. Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys) will serve as showrunner.
The podcast debuted back in 2018 and has had a successful run with a loyal following through all three of its seasons so far.
Archive 81‘s logline reads as follows: When archivist Dan Turner takes a mysterious job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994, he finds himself reconstructing the work of documentary filmmaker Melody Pendras and her investigation into a dangerous cult. As Dan is drawn into Melody’s story, he becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.
Mamoudou Athie (Black Box) is set to star as Turner while Dina Shihabi (Altered Carbon) will appear as Pendras. Paul Harris Boardman (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will write the series and will also serve as an executive producer. James Wan will also serve as an executive producer on the project under his Atomic Monster banner.
Deadline quoted Sonnenshine saying, “With Archive 81, we’re hoping to give the supernatural horror genre a new twist — while keeping a dark, deeply emotional romance as its core. Alongside the talented Mamoudou Athie and Dina Shihabi, and visionary partners Atomic Monster and Rebecca Thomas, I’m excited to take Netflix viewers on a terrifying and visually thrilling adventure.”
With its built-in following, Archive 81 has the potential to draw in a large audience, and iHorror will keep you posted on all the details as the series comes to life.
