Hereditary is almost upon us, and we can’t contain our excitement. The trailers advertise it’s being compared to The Exorcist, called a modern-day horror masterpiece, and one of the scariest films in years.
A few weeks ago, we reported on an unsuspecting Peter Rabbit showing in Australia that fell into chaos after the Hereditary trailer was accidentally screened prior to the movie. While that is definitely a testament to the film’s level of terror, it’s safe to say that audience likely wasn’t filled with seasoned horror fans. So A24 has set out to make believers out of all of us by testing the film on a more prepared audience.
According to Mashable, the heart rates of 20 participants were tracked with Apple Watch’s Health app during promotional screenings of the film at eleven different Alamo Drafthouse Theaters. They randomly selected five of the participants heart rates to show the effect the film had on its audience members.
The result? You may want to ask your doctor if your heart is strong enough for Hereditary.
Check out their findings below:
Allow us to put this into perspective. Mashable notes the average resting heart rate should fall somewhere in the 60-100 beats per minute range. The graph shows their viewers experienced a steady, but intense heart rate climb from the film’s first act at an already elevated 130 BPM to the climax at a whopping 164 BPM. Basically, you can skip your trip to the gym after you leave the theater.
While this really isn’t an exact science, it definitely bodes well for critics’ claims. iHorror’s own Trey Hilburn III said in his SXSW review, “Hereditary is dangerous anxiety inducing filmmaking, Aster creates a new, raw and terrifying path for the horror genre.” The emphasis on anxiety sounds pretty consistent with the results of the heart rate challenge. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out for ourselves just how heart-stopping Hereditary actually is. The highly anticipated horror nightmare will finally be unleashed this Friday on June 8.
