One of the many things that have disappeared with the modern era is the trend of the movie trailer voiceover. Gone are the “in a world” days of yore. That said, Harpoon has revived the trailer voiceover with a fantastic self-aware twist.
With a sardonically pitch-perfect voiceover by comedian Brett Gelman, the new sales trailer for Harpoon paints a hilariously deranged picture.
Harpoon is a black comedy about the rivalries, dark secrets, and sexual tension that amount when three best friends find themselves stranded on a yacht in the middle of the ocean under suspicious circumstances.
Bringing a new twist on the lost-at-sea subgenre, the film looks deliciously demented. If we can trust the many (completely legitimate) pull quotes in the trailer, this is definitely one to watch out for.
Written and directed by Rob Grant (Alive), Harpoon – which had its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam – was recently acquired out of the Cannes market by Epic Pictures, so hopefully we’ll see it grace local screens in the near future.
With his perfect family and perfect upbringing, Richard (Christopher Gray, The Mist) appears to have it all. So when he thinks that his long-term girlfriend, Sasha (Emily Tyra, Code Black), and best friend, Jonah (Munro Chambers, Turbo Kid), are having an affair, it sends him into a fit of rage that leaves Jonah a bloody mess.
Once Jonah and Sasha convince Richard the allegations are false, Richard tries to buy back their trust by taking them out for a day-trip on his family’s yacht. Tension boils over once out to sea, and to make matters worse, the yacht’s engine fails, leaving the trio stranded without food and supplies.
