HBO is still trying to get subscribers back after the final season of Game of Thrones last year so it would make sense that they would want another epic supernatural hit, enter Clive Barker’s Hellraiser.
But even more exciting is that Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green is set to direct the pilot and subsequent episodes according to Deadline.
The horror series will feature Cenobite icon Pinhead, of course. He will presumably be joined by the rest of hell’s most kinky inhabitants made famous by the 1987 film.
Michael Dougherty (X-Men United, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Trick r’ Treat) and Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Gallactica, Daredevil, Heroes) will pen the script.
Deadline says this incarnation isn’t a reboot but, an “elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. Expect a revisit from Pinhead, the merciless leader of the Cenobites, the formerly humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.”
Hellraiser has spawned nine sequels and remains a staple in the realm of horror mythopoeia.
Green is in the midst of filming his retconned Halloween trilogy. There is no word as to when this Hellraiser series will hit HBO.
There is another unrelated film tied to the novella in the works, but not this series.
