Just two weeks prior to this year’s Halloween, 20th Century Fox releases the animated feature film The Book of Life, which is centered around the Mexican celebration known as Dia De Los Muertos, aka the Day of the Dead.
Produced by visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the film tells the tale of Manolo, a matador who has his heart set on a young woman named Maria. Torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, Manolo is soon plunged into a fantastical adventure spanning three different worlds, where he must face and fend off his greatest fears; the Land of the Living, the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten.

As a huge fan of the beautiful imagery associated with Dia De Los Muertos, I’m very much looking forward to this one, and I can’t think of a better person to be involved in such a project than Guillermo del Toro. Judging by this gorgeous trailer, the film looks to essentially be the Mexican answer to Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas, and it’s sure to – at the very least – be a delicious feast for the eyes.
… not as delicious as all-you-can-eat Churros, mind you, but what the hell is?!
The Book of Life‘s impressive and widely-varied voice cast includes Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo. Look for it in theaters on October 17th!
