It’s been a little too long since we last heard from our little pals – the Mogwai. 1990’s kitchen sink sequel The New Batch was the last official bit of Gremlins goodness. Looks, like the wait isn’t too far off for something we have all been waiting for.
In a recent interview with Collider, executive producer Brendan Hay spilled the beans on some big Gremlins news. HBO Max is going to bring an animated series titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai to its subscription service in 2021. The show is produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation.
The show’s synopsis goes like this:
In the animated television adaptation, we travel back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
Hay also gave some visual confirmation goodies in the form of this Tweet:
