Ah, Gremlins, a movie that’s been near and dear to me since my childhood, and I know many others feel the same way. Joe Dante’s 1984 classic is not only one of the best mixes of horror and comedy ever, but also one of the best Christmas movies.
I also have a ton of love for 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, although I realize the appreciation for that film is much less universal than the original. For years now, there have been attempts to get a third movie made, but none have panned out.
Now, Gremlins is finally set to expand its universe a bit, albeit in animated form. As reported by THR, prequel series Secrets of the Mogwai is officially on its way to WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, recently rumored to be called HBO Max.
Secrets of the Mogwai will consist of 10 episodes, and be about the young adventures of Sam Wing, Gizmo’s original owner, in 1920s Shanghai. After meeting Gizmo, Wing and new friend Elle try to return the Mogwai to his family, and uncover lost treasure.
Standing in the way of Gizmo, Sam, and Elle’s quest is an evil industrialist backed by an army of Gremlins. While this obviously sounds like a family friendly project, THR’s report calls the show “adult-focused,” although it’s unclear what exactly that means.
