Before Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot hits theaters on May 16th, a prequel will be released in the form of a graphic novel, dubbed Godzilla: Awakening.
Legendary Comics will unleash the book on May 7th – just nine days before the King of the Monsters stomps into theaters. Watch Edwards’ announcement of the project below, and then read on for the details.
Max Borenstein (the movie’s screenwriter) and Greg Borenstein wrote the 72-page comic, which is set decades before the film. It’s illustrated by Eric Battle, Yvel Guichet, Alan Quah and Lee Loughridge and features cover art by Arthur Adams, a well-respected artist who has a long history with Godzilla.
Here’s the official description of Godzilla: Awakening, which doesn’t shed much light on the subject:
Delve into an incredible mystery, generations in the making. At the dawn of the atomic age, humanity awakens lifeforms beyond imagination, unleashing monumental forces of nature. This explosive, larger-than-life adventure is the perfect way for fans to experience the new Godzilla before seeing it in theaters.
Legendary Pictures took a similar route with Pacific Rim, releasing the prequel comic Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero prior to the film’s theatrical release. The model seems to be working out for them, and I’m always down for more Godzilla!
