It’s been about three decades since we saw Gizmo and Billy from Gremlins on screen together. Well, the wait is over in a new Mountian Dew commercial where the duo samples the brand’s zero sugar option (Now there are two aftertastes?!).
Zach Galligan played Billy Peltzer in the original Gremlins (1984) movie and reprised the role in its 1990 sequel The New Batch.
There is a third film in the Gremlins universe currently being worked. But until then we will take what we can get and if that means we get Billy and Gizmo pitching a legal stimulant in the form of a neon green soft drink then so be it.
In a recent interview for EW.com, Galligan explains that being next to his furry friend was not only nostalgic but surprisingly emotional.
“There was a time when we were shooting the commercial, and we had a little bit of a break, and the puppeteer is next to me and he’s manipulating Gizmo’s arms,” he said. “I leaned over to Gizmo and I was like, ‘How are you doing, buddy? It’s good to see you.’ It was so realistic that, after hours of working with it, it has its own reality. I did get a little choked up, not so much about reuniting with the puppet, but more that it sends you rocketing back 37 years in a way that almost nothing else does.”
Galligan is fully aware that there is a new king of kawaii who reigns supreme in pop culture that goes by the misnomer “Baby Yoda.” When asked who he thinks is more enchanting, Gizmo or Grogu, he replies with the obvious choice.
“Well, I’m going to say my buddy is cuter. He’s fuzzier and, to me, fuzzy is cuter. Baby Grogu seems like he’s kind of been shaved, or maybe he’s hairless,” he said.
HBO Max is currently working on an animated series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai that will hit the streamer later this year.
