Cult favorite Ginger Snaps has been put into development as a TV series by Killing Eve producers Sid Gentle Films and Copperheart Entertainment which responsible for the film trilogy. Anna Ssemuyaba (Guerilla) is on board to write the series.
Deadline quoted John Fawcett, director of the original film who will also serve as an executive producer on the project, saying, ““Could it be more socially relevant in this day and age to launch the television series, Ginger Snaps? For me, this is the ultimate follow-up to Orphan Black and I know those fans will find new love with the iconic Ginger and Brigette Fitzgerald. Anna Ssemuyaba is the perfect writer to help us bring our edgy, girl-power horror story to the small screen. I can’t wait for a big bite of this!”
“I have long loved Ginger Snaps and its incisive portrayal of the agony, ecstasy, and unbridled rage that comes with being a teenage girl,” said Ssemuyaba in the same article. “I’m honoured to be reimagining it for a new audience.”
It’s been 20 years since the teenage werewolf film first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film starred Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins as sisters Ginger and Brigette who live their lives as outcasts in their hometown. On the night of her first period, Ginger is bitten by a werewolf, turning her puberty into some more monstrous than she could have expected.
The film spawned two sequels Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning.
There is no word yet on the how they will proceed with the adaptation, but iHorror will keep you posted on those details as they become available.
