It’s been five years since Mad Max: Fury Road burst onto the big screen with Tom Hardy in the titular role alongside Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.
Since the overwhelming success of the film, rumors have abounded about a possible follow-up and where its focus might land.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Miller finally opened up on the topic saying that he’s moving ahead with a prequel story that will focus on Furiosa. He won’t, however, be bringing Theron back.
It isn’t because he was unimpressed with the actress’s work in the film, however. Rather, he says, the film will take place when Furiosa is in her 20s, and while he considered de-aging Theron using CGI, he ultimately decided to recast instead.
Miller went on to explain that while Fury Road was in development he and co-writer Nick Lathouris spent a great deal of time meticulously creating backstories for each of the characters in the film and in that process Furiosa’s became one of the most compelling for them.
In fact, before they even began shooting the film, they had already hammered out a script for a second.
Five years later, Miller is now far enough into the process to begin auditioning actresses to take on the role and is ready to give the film his full focus once he is able to complete Three Thousand Years of Longing, a drama starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton whose production was halted amid concerns over Covid-19.
