Get ready to sit around the camp fire for a brand new spooky story from “The Midnight Society.”

Fresh off his MASSIVELY successful debut weekend of The Nun,  Gary Dauberman chatted with Slash Film about some of his (up-coming) projects including IT: Chapter 2, Annabelle 3 and DC’s Swamp Thing. The screenwriter promised a new story for his re-imagined Are You Afraid of the Dark film.

Are You Afraid of the Dark was a Canadian, family-friendly, anthology series presented on Nickelodeon in 1991 centered around “The Midnight Society,” a group of teens who would gather around the camp fire weekly to share “ghost stories.”

The show was a watered-down, teenage, version of The Twilight Zone.

Dauberman hopes to honor the shows particularly darker and disturbing undertones. Admitting he enjoyed how every story told by “The Midnight Society” did not always have a happy ending.

“I really embraced that side of things and I think it’s been a long time,” said Dauberman to Slash Flim. “I think fear is healthy for kids. I don’t think we have to always sand down the edges of things and that’s something I really wanted to do with Are You Afraid of the Dark.”

The re-imagining of the 90’s Nickelodeon show will not, however, be revisiting any of the episodes fans grew up loving. Instead, Are You Afraid of the Dark will feature a completely new chilling tale.

“It is a completely original story I came up with, but it still has “The Midnight Society” and it still has the campfire. It’s still a story being told……. I think it is scary and I think kids will be scared watching it at times, and also they’ll laugh at times.”

When asked about his highly anticipated sequel, IT: Chapter Two – Dauberman wrote part one and is returning to pen a tear-jerking finale – Dauberman was ecstatic about getting to the iconic “Jade of the Orient” scene.

One thing Dauberman described as different this time around concerned the actual Losers Club. In Part One, the bunch is seen together in school, but 27 years later, the gang is scattered throughout the country. Fans will get to piece together who each of the losers have become, which is exciting.

Dauberman also briefly talked about his upcoming DC’s Swamp Thing series, which will be more extreme than audiences might expect. Like his recent hard R-rated, The Nun, Dauberman always planned for Swamp Thing to remain true to the gore.

Swamp Thing will be presented on the DC streaming service, which encouraged Dauberman to go as extreme as possible. Of course, it did not take much convincing.

Inspiration for the new series draws from Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing comics. For fans of the novels, Dauberman promises to keep it weird, extreme and scary.

Annabelle 3 will also feature Dauberman behind the camera and pen. However, fans will have to wait and see if the Warrens will return for the third act.

“That is a great question and we’ll have to wait and see…….I’m actually writing and directing that one. That’s going to go before cameras mid-October so I’m deep in prep on that now.”

After being away in Romania, thanks to the filming of The Nun, Dauberman is returning to the home of the Warrens. Annabelle 3 will follow what happens when Annabelle comes into the artifact room and how it affects her surroundings.

Dauberman has become a go-to for horror creations. With so many up-coming projects and the box-office success of The Nun, we don’t see an end to his madness anytime soon.

Are you Afraid of the Dark is set to hit theaters October 11, 2019.
