Furiosa, the new Mad Max film and origin story of the popular character from Mad Max: Fury Road, is in final preparations to begin filming in New South Wales, Australia. The film will reportedly be the biggest ever made in Australia.
Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, The Witch) will take on the titular role starring opposite Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Ragnarok). Hemsworth appeared with franchise creator George Miller in a press conference today to talk about plans for the project which is set for release on June 23, 2023.
The film will reportedly funnel $350 million AUD into the area and create somewhere in the neighborhood of 850 jobs.
Mad Max: Fury Road was a stellar film that earned over $370 million worldwide, and this highly anticipated next chapter could easily do that and more. Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa was one of the stand-out characters of that film, and it will be interesting to learn her backstory.
The director remarked in the presser that stability at Warner Bros. has been key to the project’s progress.
“Since we started Fury Road I think there’s been six different regimes at Warner Bros,” he said. “Now it’s stabilized very much and they’re able to basically pay attention coherently to the films they want to make and this is one of them.”
