Some have already figured as much at this point, but it’s looking highly unlikely that a new Friday the 13th will see a 2015 release despite it reportedly being slated for November 13th.
The good news is that the ball is still rolling on the project, albeit very slowly. The bad news is that we’re already half way through January, and they don’t even have a script ready.
The latest bit of information (and it’s a very small bit) comes from Collider (via FridayThe13thFranchise.com), which spoke with producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form from Platinum Dunes. Asked about the film, Form said:
“Just working on the script still. Hoping to make that movie this year and Brad, I’m gonna confirm that Jason is in the movie.”
As you may recall, there were, at one point, rumors that the next Friday the 13th might not include Jason. That was (thankfully) horseshit, and was squashed some time ago, but fans have still been looking forward to a 2015 release.
The words “just working on a script” and “hoping to make that movie this year” don’t make that seem very likely. It’s not necessarily totally out of the question, but come on.
I don’t know how committed they are to releasing the film on an actual Friday the 13th, but after November, there’s not another one until May 13th, 2016. The next one after that is January 13, 2017. The May 2016 date seems like it could be a real possibility at this point, but there’s really not a lot of point in speculating. For now, let’s just hope they come up with a decent script.
Last we heard was that the film was to be set in the 80s, which filled me with great elation, and that Pamela Voorhees may figure significantly into the film (which scaled that elation back a bit for me). Don’t get me wrong. I love Pamela as much as the next guy. I just don’t see a real need to travel down that road this time around. That is unless we’re talking about a decomposed severed head.
Platinum Dunes, thrill me.
In case you missed, there is supposedly a Friday the 13th video game on the way, which sounds amazing.
