The early years of the horror genre in film saw the rise of legendary icons like Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein, and Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolfman. In the 80s, a new generation of icons arose, clearly led by Robert Englund’s dream slasher Freddy Krueger.
Englund would play the character in a total of eight films, and a short-lived anthology TV series. He became so popular that Freddy’s face was plastered on every type of merchandise imaginable, and he even did mainstream things like host video blocks on MTV.
Sadly, Englund hasn’t donned Freddy’s make-up since 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, and previously said he never would again. That was until the actor surprisingly signed on to reprise the role for the upcoming Halloween episode of 80’s-set ABC sitcom The Goldbergs.
The episode – entitled “Mr. Knifey Hands” – airs Wednesday night at 8pm EST, and Movie Web managed to get their hands on a new short teaser. In spite of its brief length, the teaser does feature the first footage of Englund back in character as Freddy, a welcome sight to be sure.

While it’s still a bit puzzling that Englund agreed to do this, clearly something about The Goldbergs impressed him. Now, here’s hoping he likes playing Freddy again so much that he does another actual Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It’s highly unlikely, but we can dream.
