Tom Cruise Circling Quentin Tarantino’s Manson Project

Published

on

Could you see Tom Cruise playing Charles Manson? How about Cruise as Charles “Tex” Watson, Manson’s chief henchman? Roman Polanski? How about Manson Family prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi? Physically, Cruise most resembles Jay Sebring, a celebrity hairstylist and former lover of the Manson Family’s most famous victim, actress Sharon Tate. Who else is there?

Tom Cruise is at the top of Quentin Tarantino’s short list for one of the two lead male roles in Tarantino’s next film, which will be related to the Charles Manson/Helter Skelter killings. Margot Robbie has already been cast to play Sharon Tate in the film, which will be set in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are also on the list to join the film, which is currently seeking a distributor.

With the unfolding demise of The Weinstein Company, the company that distributed all of Tarantino’s previous films, Tarantino is seeking a new base of operations. Tarantino and his fellow producer, David Heyman, are now taking bids for domestic rights to the currently untitled project, which is presently being referred to as 9, because this will be the Tarantino’s ninth feature as a director. This has resulted in a bidding war.

The Manson saga has been the subject of several previous films, most notably the acclaimed 1976 television film Helter Skelter and the 2004 feature film The Manson Family. Although media speculation has suggested that the primary focus of Tarantino’s film will be on Charles Manson and the killing spree, insiders who’ve read Tarantino’s script have suggested that Charles Manson will be more of a peripheral and symbolic figure in the story. The script has been described as being similar to Pulp Fiction in tone with a heavy focus on character and drama.

Tarantino’s film, which will be set in Los Angeles, will begin production in mid-2018 and is scheduled for a 2019 release.
