Knock Knock

A few weeks ago, Tightwad Terror Tuesday brought you Death Game in honor of the late Sondra Locke.  This week, we have the modern-day remake Knock Knock.  This 2015 movie is about a married man who is all alone in his big fancy house while his family is away for the weekend.  But he’s only alone until a pair of troublemaking girls show up to tempt him with their charms.  Predictably, they make his life miserable.

Eli Roth directed this little thriller, which also means his wife, Lorenza Izzo, plays one of the seductive girls.  The other is portrayed by Ana de Armas, and the poor hapless husband is played by none other than Keanu Reeves.  This one is just as much fun as you’d expect an Eli Roth joint to be.  Check out Knock Knock here at TubiTV.

Maggie (2015), courtesy Lionsgate.

Maggie is a 2015 movie about a father whose daughter is infected by an epidemic that turns its victims into zombies.  As the infection runs its course, the father stays beside the daughter to protect her, knowing full well that eventually he will have to make an ultimate sacrifice.

This is the perfect movie for those with zombie fatigue.  Sure, it’s got zombies, but at its root is a heartwarming story of loyalty and survival.  In a surprisingly nuanced performance, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the father, and Abigail Breslin is just as good as the daughter.  See Maggie here, also at TubiTV.

Enemy (2013), courtesy A24.

Enemy is about a college professor who happens to spot his exact double while watching a movie.  He begins stalking the actor, first watching every movie he can find of his, but eventually learning where he lives and becoming obsessed with meeting his twin.  Of course, the doppelganger has plans for the professor, too.

This 2013 slow-burn creepfest stars Jake Gyllenhaal as both the professor and the actor.  Melanie Laurent and Sarah Gadon play their respective significant others, and Isabella Rossellini pops in as the actor’s mom.  Enemy was directed by Denis Villeneuve before he went all Arrival/Sicario/Blade Runner 2049 on us, and it features one of the most unforgettable endings in recent history.  Have a look for yourself here at Kanopy.

Forbidden World (1982), courtesy New World Pictures.

Forbidden World

Also known as Mutant, Forbidden World is about a group of scientists who create an artificial life form that will supposedly wipe out hunger in the galaxy.  The synthetic creature has other ideas, though, and when it starts to rebel, its creators call in a mercenary to help them solve their problem.

Made in 1982, Forbidden World is classic low-budget sci-fi at its finest.  It’s corny, melodramatic, fantastical, and a whole lot of fun.  Of course, it’s a Roger Corman production, and of course, it’s derivative of every other early eighties sci-fi flick that came before it, but what B-movie from the era isn’t?  Sit back and enjoy Forbidden World right here at ShoutFactoryTV.

The Last Starship (2016), courtesy Gula Mons Filmsyndikat.

The Last Starship

Speaking of derivative sci-fi…The Last Starship takes place in a world where normal humans are subservient to their generically modified superiors.  The only hope the normal people have of survival lies in the legend of a Last Starship (so it’s not just a clever name) that is supposed to return and free them from their oppressors.

Not to be confused with The Last Starfighter, this 2016 sci-fi adventure has it all – monsters, zombies, mutants, space tanks.  It’s not very focused, and aside from some cool production design, it’s a substandard movie, but did you hear me?  Monsters, zombies, mutants, and space tanks!!  Catch The Last Starship here at Popcornflix.
