Quentin Tarantino ‘Really Liked’ It Follows, Shares What He Thinks Kept it From Being Great
New York Magazine has a new interview with Quentin Tarantino, which was published by Vulture for the web. It tackles numerous topics including the state of Hollywood cinema, The Hateful Eight, and Tarantino’s career in general.
Titles from the horror genre came up a couple of times beyond the disappointing financial performance of Grindhouse, which Tarantino referred to as a time when he was “definitely less confident” in his career that at any other point.
Interviewer Lane Brown asked him what his favorite movies of the year have been. He indicated that he hadn’t seen much of anything as he has been working on his own movie, but that he loved Kingsman and “really liked It Follows“. Brown asked him what he liked about it, and he said:
It was the best premise I’ve seen in a horror film in a long, long, long time. It’s one of those movies that’s so good you get mad at it for not being great.
On how it could have been great:
He could have kept his mythology straight. He broke his mythology left, right, and center.
Later in the interview, he was asked if there are any franchises he would want to direct. You might find his response to that one interesting:
I could have imagined doing the first Scream. The Weinsteins were trying to get Robert Rodriguez to do it. I don’t even think they thought I would be interested. I actually didn’t care for Wes Craven’s direction of it. I thought he was the iron chain attached to its ankle that kept it earthbound and stopped it from going to the moon.
Obviously Scream went on to become a bonafide classic of the genre, but one can’t help but wonder what it would have been like with Tarantino steering the ship. It certainly would have been a completely different film, but no doubt with just as many references to other films.
Of course Tarantino and Rodriguez would collaborate on From Dusk Till Dawn, which Dimension released the same year it released Scream. Interestingly enough, both franchises are in the middle of television series nearly 20 years later.
If you’re a Tarantino fan, be sure to give the full interview a read. It’s lengthy and full of good stuff.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed
Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.
This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.
The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.
The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.
Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.
Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
