I think it’s pretty safe to assume that everyone reading this right now has played around with a Ouija Board at least once in their life. The idea, of course, is that a group of friends place their hands on a triangular piece of plastic referred to as a ‘planchette,’ which moves around the board and spells out words – compelled to do so by a spirit from the other side.
As a kid, I played around with a Toys R Us-purchased Ouija Board on a handful of occasions, with my most notable experience quite frankly creeping me right the hell out.
Shortly after pro wrestler Owen Hart plunged to his death, the result of a botched stunt, my friend Andrew and I used the board in an attempt to make contact with him. Though nothing happened at first, and no words were ever spelled out, an action figure of Owen Hart that I had set up on top of my TV – in tribute to him – fell down onto the ground right as we called out to him, which needless to say spooked the both of us.
A mere coincidence or true evidence of the paranormal, and proof that Ouija Boards are the real deal? Well, I’ll leave that for you to decide.
In any event, the Blumhouse-produced horror flick Ouija is set for release on October 24th, and just today the trailer has hit the net, in the wake of it playing theatrically over the course of the past few weeks.
Directed by Stiles White and starring “Bates Motel”/The Quiet Ones‘ Olivia Cooke, the film centers on a group of young friends who use a Ouija Board to make contact with a deceased friend, opening up a horrifying portal to the other side and unleashing malicious entities into the home.
