There’s been a lot of news dripping out the past couple of months about Sony’s upcoming Marvel movie Venom, and finally, FINALLY, we have our first real look with the release today of the first teaser trailer!

Last month director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and lead actor Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) shared a video from the set giving us our first real details. Most notably, the announcement that the plot of the movie is based on the classic ‘Lethal Protector’ and ‘Planet of the Symbiotes’ storylines from the comics.

This means that while the main villain has been confirmed to be Carnage, we could also see up to five more symbiotes in addition to our anti-hero.

It has also been confirmed that Tom Holland will appear in his role as Peter Parker, though how he relates to the movie is yet to be seen, and the confirmations make clear this is Peter Parker and NOT Spider-man. Holland’s appearance brings with it a lot of questions about how this movie fits into the MCU despite claims that Venom is separate.

So we may be in for a few surprises.

Fans have been clamoring for a Venom movie for years, even before the disastrous appearance in 2007’s Spider-Man 3 where the character was eclipsed among multiple other villains and portrayed by Topher Grace (That 70’s Show). Hardy has promised, though, that he has played the character as the best Venom that he could be, and given his experience with dark and gritty roles, we should be excited to see what they’ve come up with.

Though the full cast list is yet to be released, the movie also stars Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island), and Woody Harrelson (No Country for Old Men, Zombieland).

Venom is set to be rated R, and unleashed on October 5th, 2018.
