It appears that Sony is ramping things up with the production of a sequel to the 2009 comedy horror hit Zombieland. According to a report from GWW, Zombieland 2 will aim to begin shooting on January 28th.
With Ruben Fleischer set to helm the directors seat and original writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning, Zombieland 2 will look to build off of the chemistry of the cast and the success of the first film. Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Woody Harrelson are all set to reprise their iconic roles that helped jumpstart many of their careers.
Along with filming in Atlanta again, Tennessee is rumored to be a second location for some scenes.
“The group will face a new zombie threat as a new breed of zombie has developed. This new super-zombie type is faster, bigger, and stronger than the previous strain of zombies and harder to kill. These super-zombies have started grouping up into a horde going from city to city leaving a path of destruction behind them.”
Since the first Zombieland burst onto the big screen in 2009, audiences have obsessed over the zombie genre with major titles like World War Z, Warm Bodies, and AMC’s highly praised The Walking Dead.
Whether or not the market has been over saturated during the almost decade-long gap between films, it will most certainly play a part in the success or failure of the anticipated sequel. But with all the core players coming back to bring us another hilarious and bloody thrill ride across the country, it’s hard to imagine that Zombieland 2 will be anything short of spectacular.
Sony is aiming for a theatrical release date of October 11th, 2019.
