Performing artist Gelsey Laurie has only a few followers on YouTube; if you think 370 is “a few.” But that might change after people watch her and her father’s rendition of the classic dinner scene from the movie Beetlejuice.
It seems that something good came out of the coronavirus quarantine after all as Gelsey portrays Catherine O’Hara’s character Dalia Deetz among other dinner guests. Her father takes on the male roles, all of them, including Charles, originally played by the late Jeffrey Jones.
The scene is pivotal in the movie as recently deceased Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) try to scare the Deetz family out of the home they are haunting; it was theirs before they died and don’t want interlopers.
Hence the makeshift poltergeist activity at a dinner party where they invoke Harry Belafonte’s Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) to possess the guests and hope to drive them away, but the plan backfires because the eccentric Deetz’s see the event as an opportunity to scale the social ladder. Having failed, the Maitlands call in the offensive and destructive Betelgeuse (Beetlejuice).
Gelsey seems to suffer from the rare affliction associated with cabin fever: Recreating famous movie scenes using only things found around the house including her father.
The duo has also taken short musical takes on scenes from Mary Poppins and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Thanks Gelsey and dad for making this year just a little bit better.
