Sony’s Escape Room 2 has moved its release date. Initially slated to open on August 14, 2020, the film will now see its wide release on December 30, 2020.
Adam Robitel (The Take of Deborah Logan) is once again in the director’s chair for the sequel which will also see the return of Taylor Russell (Lost in Space) and Logan Miller (Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse) who narrowly escaped the deadly puzzle rooms constructed by the mysterious Minos Corporation in the first film.
Russell and Miller are joined by Indya Moore (Pose), Holland Roden (Teen Wolf), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), Thomas Cocquerel (Table 19), and Carlito Olivero (East Los High) in the sequel.
Escape Room grossed approximately $150 million in the worldwide box office on a budget of only $9 million and the sequel went into planning almost immediately.
While there is no official word on the reasons behind the move, Deadline points out that this moves the film out of a crowded late-Summer schedule where it would have been opening alongside Disney’s The One and Only Ivan, Universal’s Nobody, and James Wan’s Malignant.
There’s also something to be said for a late December release. The holidays find people cramped together for extended periods of time, and an action/thriller is certainly appealing when you’re looking for a break from family time and the beginning of the real Winter doldrums that set in at the New Year.
There’s also the fact that the first film did exceptionally well in around the same time period, having opened on January 4, 2019. We’re betting that Sony is counting on a repeat of the first film’s business in a familiar slot.
Hopefully, we’ll see trailers and images from the new film soon to give us a peek at what we have to look forward to in Escape Room 2.
