Sony Pictures Possibly Confirmed Release Date of ‘Morbius’ and Existence of ‘Venom 2’

Venom sequel and Morbius movie

Despite Sony’s Venom receiving lukewarm reviews overall, even from us at iHorror, it still captured the insane and psychopathic nature of Eddie Brock’s duality with the anti-hero symbiote and managed to rake in a killing at the box office. If there’s anything that will bring us a sequel, it usually comes down to quantity over quality, and the quantity of Venom‘s sales assuredly means it’s not a matter of if there’s going to be a sequel, but when the sequel will be released.

Reported by Variety, that “when” maybe in 2020 of October. According to the site, Sony Pictures has selected two specific dates that have ties to their installments in Marvel’s cinematic universe. One date is set for October 2 of 2020, which is presumed to be the second Venom movie’s debut, but there’s also a date scheduled for July 10th of that year. The current speculation is that July’s date is for none other than the infamous living vampire: Morbius.

Announced earlier this year, Jared Leto (Blade Runner 2049, Requiem for a Dream, and Suicide Squad) was brought on by Sony Pictures to star in the “Spider-verse” spinoff film about the mad scientist turned into a malicious vampire, which will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life and Safe House) and written by creators Gil Kane and Roy Thomas. Along with Kane and Thomas, Morbius will be produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man), Lucas Forster (Jeepers Creepers II), and Matt Tolmach (Spider-Man: Homecoming). Concerning the writing credits, the screenplay will be scribed by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold and Power Rangers).  No additional cast members have been confirmed, but considering Sony Pictures has only two “Spider-verse” films they’re actively working on, it’s likely that the studio has the two dates reserved for Morbius and Venom‘s sequel, with Tom Hardy returning as Eddie Brock/Venom.

Venom and Morbius are revered for their horror and dark themed stories in the Spider-Man series, but Spider-Man’s relation to the horror genre branches beyond the likes of Morbius, Venom, Carnage, or the Marvel Zombies’ Universe. In fact, did you know that while Evil Dead‘s Sam Raimi directed the Toby Maguire Spider-Man films, they were almost directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Tobe Hooper and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter‘s Joseph Zito? No, I’m not joking, and if you want to find out more you can check out our editorial on the Spider-Man horror film that almost came to fruition.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.
