Lin Shaye Heads to L.A. in ‘Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’

In Hollywood, when you want your audience to scream, you put Lin Shaye in your project, after all, she is the Godmother of Horror.

That sounds a bit hyperbolic but we’ll go with it because it’s so darn accurate.

Showtime seems to think so too because they have cast the actress in their frightening spin-off to Penny Dreadful called City of Angels. She plays Dottie Minter, a character associated with Nathan Lane’s Detective Lewis Michener.

The series takes place half a century after the events of the original, but this time all the hell breaks loose in, as the title implies, Los Angeles.

Shaye will appear in six of the 10 episodes helping the detective sort through strange occurrences throughout an already tumultuous city.

In the flagship series, writers focused on the characters in British and Irish Gothic fiction. This time around the lore has Latin roots and is centered much closer to home.

Here’s the synopsis:

“1938 Los Angeles is a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega and his partner Lewis Michener become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”

Shaye was last seen in the underrated Grudge reboot and will appear in the upcoming Dreamkatcher.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on Showtime on April 26, 2020.

Even for masters of horror like Eli Roth and Crypt TV, this is a monumental undertaking. However, if I trust anyone to change the way that we experience horror, it would be these two legends.
