DARK CRYSTAL Netflix Series Announced

Published

on

Netflix is one fire with their new original series everyone. Earlier in the week it was announced that they would be adapting the popular video game series as well as polish novels The Witcher into a Netflix original series, and now it’s been announced that Dark Crystal is to be receiving the same treatment.

For those unaware Dark Crystal was a child’s fantasy film released in 1982 about the evil Skeksis hoping to snuff out Jen, the protagonist as well as the last of his kind the Gelflings.  The Skeksis are aware of a prophecy that Jen will reform the Dark Crystal and destroy the Skeksis and end their tyranny over the dying land.

Netflix’s adaption of Dark Crystal is to serve as a prequel to the events of the original film, simply titled Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance.  It is set to take place several years before the events of the original and The Jim Henson company is proudly backing the new series even after the disappointing returns on the original movie.

The announcement was also accompanied by an official synopsis which is as follows.  “The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure.  When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save the world.”

Dark Crystal was and still is an absolutely fantastic fantasy film.  The choice by Jim Henson to go with puppets for the characters was an interesting one, but added to the overall charm of the project.  To this day I remember seeing the Skeksis for the first time and being disturbed by their absolute grotesque nature.

I mean sweet bleeding Christ look at those things, even as an adult they’re still painful to look at.  The only negative that I can truly think of for this series is that it’s a prequel.  Everyone who has already seen the original movie will know how the story will play out and ultimately what will happen to the rising revolt among the Gelfling.

But hey more Dark Crystal is never a bad thing and thankfully Netflix has a great track record of original series.  Let us hope that they are able to do justice to a beloved classic for the few who had the pleasure of seeing it, and that it will inspire a new generation of viewers to track down this little piece of cinematic magic for themselves.

Watch ‘The Burning’ At The Location Where It Was Filmed

Published

on

Fangoria is reporting that fans of the 1981 slasher The Burning will be able to have a screening of the film at the location where it was filmed. The movie is set at Camp Blackfoot which is actually the Stonehaven Nature Preserve in Ransomville, New York.

This ticketed event will take place on August 3. Guests will be able to take a tour of the grounds as well as enjoy some campfire snacks along with the screening of The Burning.

The Burning

The film came out in the early ’80s when teen slashers were being churned out in magnum force. Thanks to Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th, filmmakers wanted to get in on the low-budget, high-profit movie market and a casket load of these types of films were produced, some better than others.

The Burning is one of the good ones, mostly because of the special effects from Tom Savini who had just come off of his groundbreaking work on Dawn of the Dead and Friday the 13th. He declined to do the sequel because of its illogical premise and instead signed on to do this movie. Also, a young Jason Alexander who would later go on to play George in Seinfeld is a featured player.

Because of its practical gore, The Burning had to be heavily edited before it received an R-rating. The MPAA was under the thumb of protest groups and political bigwigs to censor violent films at the time because slashers were just so graphic and detailed in their gore.

Tickets are $50, and if you want a special t-shirt, that will cost you another $25, You can get all the information by visiting the On Set Cinema webpage.

Even for masters of horror like Eli Roth and Crypt TV, this is a monumental undertaking. However, if I trust anyone to change the way that we experience horror, it would be these two legends.
