Clive Barker Gives Update on Hellraiser Remake

Published

on

A remake and/or reboot of the Clive Barker created Hellraiser franchise has seemingly been on the minds of the Weinstein Company for about a decade now. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your opinion of the idea), talks between Bob and Harvey and potential directors and writers have always seemed to fall through due to creative differences. That was until last year, when the Weinsteins made what most would consider the obvious decision, and brought in Barker himself to script a new take on his classic tale of sex, death, pain and pleasure.

According to a recent interview with Barker, this new Hellraiser will be less a remake of the original film, and more of a contemporary story set in the same universe and containing similar themes. “I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant,” he says. “I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes.”

For starters, Barker plans to begin the story on a notorious prison once run by the French. “The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy – the Frenchman Lemarchand – who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’ He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island, and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie.”

Hellraiser - Frank

As for what stage of development the so-called Hellraiser remake is in, Barker says that he recently turned the second draft of his screenplay into Bob Weinstein, and is now waiting for the Dimension Films exec to get back to him on when the actual production of this new Hellraiser film can begin.

For Hellraiser fans wary of a remake of the 1987 classic, the fact that Clive Barker is returning to write the script is possibly the only development that could assuage their fears. Nobody knows the Cenobites better than their creator, and nobody is more fit to write a new story in their dark world. There is no still official word on who will direct the film, or whether the notoriously anti-remake Doug Bradley will return to the iconic Pinhead make-up. Still, in Clive we trust.
