There’s something special about horror comedies. Movies designed to not only scare you, but also make you laugh out loud can be difficult to pull off for writers and directors. It’s not an easy line to walk, but when it works, the results are pure gold.

Everything is so serious right now. From social media to the news, we’re inundated with statistics we don’t fully understand and grave predictions for the future that are enough to make you hide from the world even without “stay at home” orders from the government.

I don’t know about you, but I’m just a bit overwhelmed. And while I take the orders for self-isolation and quarantine very seriously, I could use a laugh. To that end, I thought I might suggest some of my favorite horror comedies along with where you can stream them right now.

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (Stream on Plex, PlutoTV, Crackle, and Tubi; Rent on Google Play, Fandango Now, Redbox, Vudu, Flix Fling, Amazon, and AppleTV)

Alan Tudyk (A Knight’s Tale) and Tyler Labine (Escape Room) star as Tucker and Dale, two good old boys just trying to enjoy their vacation and fix up their cabin. Unfortunately for them, a group of college students are in the same woods and they’ve mistaken the guys for murderous hillbillies.

What follows is an hilarious, gory farce that demands multiple viewings.

Housebound (Stream on Tubi; Rent on AppleTV)

This horror comedy from New Zealand doesn’t get nearly enough attention as far as I’m concerned. The film stars Morgana O’Reilly as Kylie, a young woman in trouble with the law, who finds herself remanded to house arrest in her mother’s home.

Her mother Miriam (Rima Te Wiata) is convinced her house is haunted and soon Kylie begins to wonder if she isn’t right.

Housebound has got it all. Chills, thrills, and a conclusion that will knock your socks off!

Black Sheep (Rent on Google Play and AppleTV)

No, I’m not talking about the film starring Chris Farley. Another entry from New Zealand, this film stars Nathan Meister as Henry. Henry grew up on a sheep farm, which was great for him until a tragic accident left him with a bad case of ovinophobia–fear of sheep.

All grown up, Henry returns to his family’s farm–now run by his brother–to face his fears once and for all. Unfortunately for him, his brother’s sheep have been genetically altered and after a run-in with one of the failed experiments, the farm’s livestock become blood-thirsty killing machines. Adding to the fear, if a human is bitten by the creatures, they turn into predatory were-sheep. I’m not kidding!

One of the taglines for the film reads “There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand…and they’re pissed off!” If you haven’t seen it, give it a watch. You’ll thank me later!

Happy Death Day (Stream on FX Now; Rent/Buy on Fandango Now, Amazon, Vudu, AppleTV, Google Play, and Redbox)

Poor Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) is having the worst birthday ever. Someone is trying to kill and worse than that, they’re succeeding. Every time she dies, she wakes up to start the day all over again!

She soon finds herself tracking down the killer in an attempt to free herself from the time loop from hell.

It’s Groundhog’s Day meets Scream. Also, you can pair this one up with its sequel Happy Death Day 2U and make it a fun double feature night on the couch.

The Babysitter (Stream on Netflix)

Young Cole (Judah Lewis) is constantly bullied at school and honestly doesn’t have a lot to look forward to at home except for the nights when his mom and dad go out and his favorite babysitter, Bee (Samara Weaving) comes to stay with him.

Bee is a total badass. She also happens to run a Satanic cult unbeknownst to Cole until he stays up past his bedtime one night and witnesses her and her friends sacrificing a teenager downstairs.

Soon Cole finds himself in a fight for survival as the cult members all do their best to make sure he can never tell their secrets. The film has an incredible cast including Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, and Bella Thorne and will leave your sides sore from laughter by the time the credits roll.

Ready or Not (Stream on HBOMax; Rent on Amazon, Vudu, Redbox, AppleTV, Google Play and Fandango Now)

Speaking of Samara Weaving, if you haven’t seen Ready or Not, stop whatever you’re doing and rectify that immediately.

Weaving plays Grace, a young woman who just married into a very wealthy family, only to discover that as part of an age-old pact, she must play a game at midnight to appease the in-laws. Soon the entire family is out to kill her, and Grace will have to use every single instinct she possesses to survive until dawn.

Satanic Panic (Stream on Shudder; Rent on Vudu, Amazon, Redbox, Fandango Now, and AppleTV)

Chelsea Stardust’s feature debuts centers on a down-on-her-luck pizza delivery girl (Hayley Griffith) takes a big delivery out to a fancy neighborhood only to find herself on the run from a sect of ultra-rich Satanists on the search for a virgin sacrifice.

The film is gory comedy gold. If you watch for no other reason, see it for Ruby Modine’s over-the-top portrayal of an aggressive, foul-mouthed young woman who has her own reasons for trying to take out the cult and Jerry O’Connell’s brief appearance as a seriously creepy douchebag.

Shaun of the Dead (Stream on HBOMax; Rent on ROW8, Fandango Now, Google Play, Amazon, Vudu, and AppleTV)

Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s zom-com is one of the best of its kind.

When an aimless TV salesman (Pegg) wakes to find the world is being taken over by zombies, he sets out to save his friends and his mother and ends up hiding out in his favorite pub.

Not only is the film hilarious, but it’s got one of the best soundtracks ever.

Little Monsters (Stream on Hulu)

Lupita Nyong’o (Us) stars as a school teacher on a field trip with her students and a washed-up musician as a chaperone. Things are going smoothly at the petting zoo until a zombie outbreak occurs and it’s up to Miss Caroline and Brad (Alexander England) to get the children to safety.

Josh Gad’s performance as a children’s TV show host who shows his true colors when the world goes sideways is incredible!
