Despite having appeared in dozens of films and TV shows over the course of her long career, Hollywood A-lister Drew Barrymore is perhaps more closely linked to her brief role in Wes Craven’s 1996 slasher classic Scream than she is to any of her other memorable performances. Well, at least as an adult, as it’s hard to outdo playing Gertie in E.T.
Drew’s eternal association with first Scream victim Casey Becker is entirely understandable though, as she absolutely knocked her performance out of the park, perfectly conveying the abject terror of the situation she found herself in.
Her deceptive presence front and center on all of Scream’s posters and marketing materials also set audiences up for a huge shock at Casey’s early demise, much like Alfred Hitchcock did with leading lady Janet Leigh in Psycho.
Drew is soon to return to our beloved horror genre for the first time in awhile, playing the lead in Netflix’s upcoming zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet, in which Drew plays a mild-mannered realtor who suddenly dies and then returns with an insatiable desire to consume human flesh.
While promoting Santa Clarita Diet during a recent French talk show appearance, Drew and Diet co-star Timothy Olyphant were asked to try and recreate Scream’s legendary opening sequence, and the results are amusingly ridiculous. Check the full clip out below.
Olyphant is himself no stranger to horror, having starred in Breck Eisner’s criminally overlooked 2010 remake of George Romero’s The Crazies. He also played a small but pivotal role in Scream 2, making this a mini franchise reunion of sorts.
As silly as the above clip is, it’s still heartening to see Drew kinda sorta reprise the role that will forever endear her to horror fans. Here’s hoping Santa Clarita Diet is a worthy edition to her genre resume.
