Ari Aster is on top of the world of indie horror at the moment. His films Hereditary and Midsommar blasted their way onto the scene through A24 and are both either films that you absolutely love or flat out hate with all your might. I’m personally in the camp that loves Aster’s works and am constantly confused when I run into folks that hate his films. In any case, Aster is ready to go ahead with his next film, Beau is Afraid and is in talks with Joaquin Phoenix to star.
Aster’s Beau is one of his many impressive short films that lead him to Midsommar and Hereditary fame. Each of his shorts have that same atmospherically fueled horror that digs under your skin. Much like his feature films, Aster’s shorts are peppered with pitch black humor. Beau is Afraid is more of that but lends itself a little bit more to the absurd comedy side of things.
Discussing Film.net were the folks who first broke the news of this possible Phoenix and Aster pairing. His 2011 short film titled Beau can be seen in its entirety online. But, in order to make things way easier for you, I’ll post it below.
The plot of Beau centers around an anxious dude named Beau who learns that his mother died under mysterious circumstances. While attempting to return home he learns things about himself while also encountering supernatural terrors.
The feature film will be written, directed and edited by Aster according to Discussing Film. We are hopeful that Phoenix decides to work with Aster as the two would be a great fit.
