One of this year’s very best horror films is the Eli Roth-produced Clown, which is absolutely bonkers in the most entertaining of ways. It was directed by Jon Watts, based on a faux trailer he made a few years back, and Watts’ career is set to soon skyrocket into the stratosphere.
Though Clown hasn’t yet been released here in the states, Watts already has a thriller titled Cop Car on the way, and Marvel reports today that he’s been hired to direct their next Spider-Man movie. Set for release on July 28, 2017, the film will once again reboot the franchise.
“As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life,” said producer Kevin Feige. “We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”
Though the reboot doesn’t yet have an official title, Marvel also reports that young actor Tom Holland has been cast as Peter Parker. Not to be confused with the director of Child’s Play and Fright Night, Holland is just 19-years-old, making him quite a bit younger than recent big screen Spideys.
It was of course Evil Dead director Sam Raimi who directed 2002’s Spider-Man, so I suppose it only makes sense that another ‘horror guy’ is once again at the helm.
Will Watts’ latest gig lead to the long-awaited US release of Clown, his feature debut? Here’s hoping!
