While it seemed that it was made pretty clear who The American was at the end of Stranger Things 3, David Harbour is no longer so sure that Hopper was in fact behind that door. Initially feeling confident that his character would return, the actor has expressed to The Wrap that he now has his doubts.
“…I really thought I was ‘The American,’ and then I haven’t heard a lot from them (laughs) … So I really don’t know if I am. But I thought I was, but it was never discussed … I didn’t ask [The Duffers], ’cause I felt confident I was — and now I’m not so confident.”
This is slightly concerning.
Also concerning is that he added that he has no idea if he’s going to be involved with the next season at all. He elaborated:
“I’ll tell you this, I don’t have work lined up right now. I am working on a book, so I’m sort of focused on that right now and I don’t really have acting worked lined up. So theoretically, if somebody called me, I could probably get on a plane and do something.”
But, he does want to return. David Harbour made that much clear.
“My hope is that there is some sort of resurrection [for Hopper], but I don’t know. I know they haven’t gone into production yet.”
I couldn’t imagine a season of Stranger Things without Harbour as Hopper. The character, and the actor who plays the officer, just feels so integral to the series that hi absence would most definitely be felt.
Still, he may return just yet. We’ll all have to sit tight until we hear more from Harbour or The Duffer Brothers. Miracles can happen, after all.
How would you feel if his supposed death was indeed final? Would you still care to watch a Harbour-less season of Stranger Things? Let us know!
