It’s been almost 10 years since we last saw the characters from the Scream universe battle Ghostface, and now we get word that Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) will be returning for the fourth cinematic sequel to the popular franchise.
The news comes from Bloody Disgusting by way of a statement from Radio Silence; the trio of producers and filmmakers behind the project which include Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet who will also be directing this next episode.
“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney,” they wrote. “We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet have enjoyed great success lately, directing the popular 2019 gothic nuptial survival horror-comedy Ready or Not.
As for Scream, Cox has been playing the role of brassy tabloid journalist-turned-true-crime novelist Gale Weathers since the beginning of the series.
There is still no definitive word on Sydney Prescott’s return. Neve Campbell who plays the badass final girl is said to have been “in talks” to reprise her role, but nothing has been confirmed.
The big question is when this installment will be delivered. Word is the release date is planned for sometime in 2021.
Cox sort of reprised her role self-referentially in an Instagram post from last Halloween where she appeared with Ghostface to make fun of her hairdo malfunction in Scream 3. Take a look:
