While movies revolving around demons and demonic possession are obviously nothing new to the horror genre, director James Wan’s 2013 film The Conjuring proved to be one of the best in recent memory, and its 2016 sequel The Conjuring 2 was no slouch either.
Wan of course made his name in Hollywood as a horror filmmaker, directing movies like Saw and Insidious. He seems to be making a transition away from directing horror though, in favor of directing more mainstream films like Furious 7 and DC’s upcoming Aquaman.
In line with that thinking, THR reports that upcoming sequel The Conjuring 3 will be the first non-spinoff Conjuring franchise entry to be directed by someone other than Wan. Taking over the director role is newcomer Michael Chaves, who’ll soon make his feature film debut.
That debut will come with New Line’s The Curse of La Llorona, a horror flick that also happens to be produced by Wan, who continues to be involved with the genre in that capacity. The Curse of La Llorona haunts theaters everywhere on April 19th, 2019.
The Conjuring 3 doesn’t yet have an official release date (2020 seems likely), although stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are returning as The Warrens, and Wan will stick around as a producer. In the meantime, latest spinoff Annabelle 3 hits theaters on July 3rd, 2019.
