Lifetime released the first poster of Christina Ricci as Lizzie Borden in its eponymous made-for-TV movie about the woman who, according to the nursery rhyme, took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks.

Mystery still surrounds the Sunday school teacher accused of killing her mother and father at their home in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892, but Lifetime seems to have declared her guilty. The poster shows 33-year-old Christina as Lizzie carrying a gory axe, with blood spattering the lace around the bottom of her long white nightgown.

Nick Gomez directed the Sony Pictures Television movie, which also stars Clea DuVall as Lizzie’s sister Emma and Billy Campbell as lawyer Andrew Jennings.

He eventually got Lizzie acquitted, but not before the true-crime case had become a national obsession with many still believing she was guilty.

Lizzie Borden — taglined ‘it’s time to bury the hatchet’ — will premiere on Lifetime on January 25.
