Wekufe: The Origin of Evil, the debut film from Chilean writer/director Javier Attridge will soon be making its way to a film festival near you, and the film’s trailer will gives viewers just a taste of the horrors to come.
Paula and Matias have traveled to Chiloe, a small Patagonia island to the south of Chile. Paula is intent on delivering a news report to her university about the high occurrence of sex crimes on the remote island which are almost universally blamed on an evil demonic entity. Matias, a burgeoning young filmmaker, wants to use the opportunity to make a found footage horror film surrounding the same entity. What could go wrong, right?
Some of the stark images in the trailer suggest a brand of horror that is both universal and yet, peculiar to Chile, a region we’ve not seen nearly enough of in most broadly distributed genre films. It’s always fascinating to discover where a different culture finds its devils and demons, its ghosts and spirits. From the trailer, I think we can count on Wekufe: The Origin of Evil to not only terrify the viewer but to also give us a glimpse of just what Chile finds scary.
