Gretel and Hansel a new re-telling of the classic fairy tale from director Osgood “Oz” Perkins has a brand new trailer and it’s creepy good!
Times are hard for sister and brother Gretel (Sophia Lillis) and Hansel (Sammy Leakey). One overcast day, Gretel, the oldest, treks into the woods with her brother in tow in search of food only to discover that an ancient evil resides there.
Alice Krige, who recently appeared in Carnival Row, is nothing short of menacing as the story’s fabled witch in the trailer which released earlier today.
Lillis can also be seen in the upcoming IT Chapter Two reprising her role as the young Beverly Marsh. She also appeared in last year’s Sharper Objects on HBO.
Filmed in Ireland, Perkins, who just so happens to be the song of Anthony “Norman Bates” Perkins, drew upon the original fairy tale while crafting a slightly different dynamic in the film by putting a larger age gap between the siblings.
According to Entertainment Weekly, he also use the historic Hell Fire Club for one of his filming locations. The ancient building has a sordid past including the fact that it was built using stones from a cairn that once stood in its location. Local legends say that the Devil himself would stop by the club to play cards from time to time.
Gretel and Hansel is set to hit theaters January 31, 2020. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments!
