It’s been seven years since we last caught up with FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, and it’s because of their lengthy absence that Fox’s upcoming six episode X-Files revival series is so damn exciting. The new show is set to premiere in January of next year, and today the very first photos have arrived.
They come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, the latest issue of which features returning stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on the cover. The outlet was on set for the first week of filming, and they’ve revealed that the revival series’ first episode will center on a possible alien abductee.
“Mulder’s not in a great place,” Duchovny told EW, when asked about the beloved character’s mental state at the present time. “He’s wearing bad jeans, so you can just extrapolate from my wardrobe. He’s in a dark, dark place.”
“I like where we find Mulder and Scully in their relationship,” added Anderson. “I also like the area of zeitgeist that we step in to. It’s on point and raises some very interesting issues. And question marks.”
Unfortunately, EW shot down rumors that an episode of the new series will be a sequel to the memorable Season 4 episode ‘Home,’ despite the fact that it’s titled ‘Home Again.’ A huge bummer, to be sure, but the photos they snagged are guaranteed to melt the sadness away.
Check out the first images from the X-Files mini-revival below, which will premiere at 10pm on Sunday, January 24th, 2016. The show returns the very next night for the second episode, with the subsequent four hitting Fox on Monday nights at 8pm.
In addition to Mulder and Scully, other characters making their triumphant returns in 2016 include FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner and the so-called ‘Cigarette Smoking Man.’
Series creator Chris Carter, who is again in charge, recently said that the revival will be comprised of both mythology episodes and standalone monster-of-the-week tales, in the style of the original series. Writers Glen Morgan and James Wong are also back, as is Glen’s brother Darin, writer of some of The X-Files’ best episodes.
