Can Cameron Monaghan be Carnage?

We know that Sony’s upcoming Venom movie will be rated R, and will star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. It will feature the super-powered mass murderer Cletus Kasady/Carnage as the villain. Nothing has been said so far about who will play the red antagonist. With no name attached, someone suggested Cameron Monaghan (Gotham, Amityville: The Awakening).

If you’ve seen the actor’s work in the television show Gotham, you know he’s got some serious skills playing cold-blooded psychopaths. Whether his character Jerome is really this story’s version of The Joker still has some debate, but there’s no denying Monaghan’s performances playing the cackling madman are so good they can send chills down your spine.

Going from the Proto-Joker to the completely unrepentant serial killer Carnage would not be a stretch of any kind. Carnage was made to be in many ways, Marvel’s parallel to the Joker. He likes to talk and make sick jokes. While the Joker still commits regular crimes here and there, and enjoys his schemes, though, Carnage is focused on wholesale slaughter. He was a serial killer before he gained a shape-shifting alien symbiote. The extra power he gained from that makes him an almost unstoppable mass-murder machine. Make no mistake, if this movie wasn’t going to be rated R, he wouldn’t be in it.

It seems Monaghan likes the idea as well, sharing on Twitter that Carnage was one of his favorite villains growing up. He says playing Carnage would be “a dream come true.” To have such a talented actor playing one of his favorite characters is one of the best things you could do in movies, especially in something as risky as an R-rated anti-hero movie like Venom.

With a release date currently set for October of this year, it might be that Sony has their actors and are keeping the info close to the chest. It also might be that they’re still looking, while they go through pre-production. Here’s hoping they at least take a look at all their options.
