Last Sunday saw the highly anticipated return of Starz’s horror/comedy series Ash vs Evil Dead to screens, for season 3. A hit among the genre community, Ash vs Evil Dead has in many ways been the Evil Dead 4 fans always wanted.
Unfortunately, it’s unclear at this point whether there will be an Ash vs Evil Dead season 4. As generally acclaimed as the show tends to be, it’s also very heavily pirated, which gives Starz little reason to keep spending money to make new episodes.
Now, I’m not here to engage in a debate about the moral implications of pirating movies and TV shows. Still, the fact that Ash vs Evil Dead might be in danger due to piracy says a lot about why paying for entertainment should be preferable, if at all possible.
That said, if Ash vs Evil Dead gets canceled, there may indeed still be hope for the future. As Bruce Campbell recently told EW, if Starz cancels AvED, the franchise might still continue with another feature film.
We won’t know [Ash vs Evil Dead’s fate] till the middle of March. We’re in the horrible television limbo right now. We’re going to see what the TV gods have in store for us. We’re ready either way. If they take us off the air, we can think about another movie. And if they don’t, we can just keep plugging away.
As cool as another proper Evil Dead movie might sound, everyone should keep in mind that just because those involved want to make one, doesn’t mean it will end up happening. In the meantime, we should all keep watching Ash vs Evil Dead, and hoping for its renewal.
