After the monumental flop that was the failed Dark Universe Mummy film starring Tom Cruise, the fate of the iconic monster has been up to speculation. Brendan Fraser, who starred in the highly successful 90’s reboot, says he would do another film. There’s just one condition – it’s gotta be fun.
Speaking with Cinema Blend, Brendan Fraser said this when asked if he would be interested in returning to the franchise:
Absolutely! Just gotta say, I know how hard it is to make that movie. I tried to do it three times, and the essential ingredient is fun. You gotta remember to have fun. So if there’s a fun way to approach it again, I’m all in.
That sounds like a more than reasonable request. It’s nice to hear Fraser talk about making movies in a way with such enthusiasm as he’s been more or less out of the spotlight for some time now. And frankly, I think seeing him return to the series would be a breath of fresh air.
For one thing, there’s been a lack of big monster movies as of late. Gone are the days of blockbuster monster films – It being the exception – while more artful, thought-provoking horror movies such as Hereditary and The Witch have taken precedence.
While there is certainly nothing wrong with that, Classic monster fans like me feel a definitive void. And there is a certain charm that an actor like Brendan Fraser brings to the screen, a true movie star vibe, that is missing from cinemas today as well.
Sorry Tom. I know you tried your best… it just didn’t work this time around. Bring back Fraser and let’s make things right, Universal.
