His up-and-down political career aside, there’s no doubt that Arnold Schwarzenegger remains a legend of action cinema. Still built like a tank at age 71, Schwarzenegger is now and will probably forever be a beloved figure in the realm of pop culture.
While films like Total Recall and Terminator 2 cemented Schwarzenegger as a huge star in the early 1990s, one of Arnold’s first major efforts was 1985’s Commando, a film often regarded today as one of the most ridiculously fun action flicks of all time.
Commando doesn’t take itself at all seriously, and features Arnold dispatching bad guys in some truly terrific ways, along with an array of immortal one liners. During a recent reddit AMA though, the legend revealed that one particular pitch didn’t go over well.
“As soon as I carried a thousand pound log with one arm I knew it was funny. But let me share the scenes you didn’t see that I tried to get in. I wanted to cut off a guy’s arm and kill him with it. This wasn’t in the script. He would throw a knife at me and after he missed, while his arm was still extended, I chop it off at the shoulder with a machete and beat him to death with it. Needless to say, I was asked by the head of the studio, Larry Gordon to come to his office. And he said “what the fuck is the matter with you? Do you want to make money with this movie or an x-rated movie?” I said “you’re right” and he said “get the fuck out of my office.”
The above idea certainly sounds like something out of the Jason Voorhees playbook, sort of combining Jason ripping a victim’s arm off in Jason Lives with him beating one person to death with another person in Jason X. We like the way you think, Arnold.
