For horror fans who grew up in the 1990s, there were few things more fun than Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? anthology series. Well, unless you had cool parents that let you watch R-rated stuff as a small child.
Me, I didn’t get to watch movies with real blood, gore, and nudity until I was a teenager, so shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? helped quench my hunger for scares and monsters. Except those last two seasons. They sucked.
Anyway, most fans are likely aware that an Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie was set to release in theaters near Halloween 2019. On October 4th to be exact. Now, THR reports that the film has lost its release date entirely.
What’s worse, a new release date has yet to be assigned, so it’s unclear when exactly the current generation will get their own Midnight Society to introduce them to the horror realm. For now, a 2019 release seems unlikely.
One wonders what this means for Nickelodeon’s recently announced Are You Afraid of the Dark? TV miniseries that was planned to coincide with the release of the film. It’s logical to assume that project will be delayed also.
We won’t be completely without nostalgic childhood horrors this year though, thanks to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie produced by Guillermo del Toro. That releases on August 9th, right in the summer rush.
