For years, Syfy has been pulling in viewers and ratings with their silly brand of monster movies, which often feature giant computer-generated creatures devouring washed up movie stars. And now, in an unexpected twist – though one that I suppose was inevitable – Animal Planet is getting in on the fun, with a CG-fueled original creature feature of their own!
Set for premiere on May 25th at 9pm EST, Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys is the network’s very first original horror movie, capping off their third annual ‘Monster Week.’ Produced exclusively for Animal Planet by The Asylum, the company behind such highly-esteemed films as Sharknado and Mega Piranha, Blood Lake stars Shannon Doherty and Christoper Lloyd and centers on the real-life creatures that are known as the ‘vampires of the deep.’
Yes, unlike many of the monsters that The Asylum has brought to life over the years, lampreys are the real deal, and they’re one of the most downright terrifying animals known to man. Living in coastal and fresh waters, lampreys are eel-like creatures that feed on the blood of other fish, attaching themselves like a suction cup and sinking their hundreds of teeth deep into their flesh. Can someone remind me why the hell anyone thinks it’s a good idea to go swimming outside the confines of a pool?!
