It seems that Andrew Lincoln (A.K.A. Rick Grimes) will be departing from The Walking Dead cast before the end of season 9, reports ComicBook.com.
While The Walking Dead’s ninth season has yet to finish its production, Lincoln has confirmed through a multitude of trusted independent sources that he will be leaving the gore-fest series before the season’s finale. AMC is expected to announce the zombie killing sheriff’s departure premature to his final episode, letting fans know how close the end is to Lincoln’s/Grimes’ time on the original series.
It has not been openly stated as to how Lincoln will exist the series through the story’s canon, but even after his role is terminated, life will go on (as sad as it is for fans to see him go). Concerning any future film or T.V. endeavors, Lincoln nor AMC have disclosed any projects the Grimes actor may have his sights set on. It would seem that (for now) Lincoln will be returning home to the U.K. Lincoln is not the only one expected to leave in the near future.
While not explicitly confirmed, Danai Gurira–who plays the katana-wielding Michonne–and Lauren Cohan–actor of Maggie Greene–are expected to leave the cast before long due to their contracts under AMC for The Walking Dead coming to an end. Again, nothing has been confirmed, but considering not much of the original cast (mainly dating back to season 3) remains on the show, it’s a safe bet to assume that Gurira and Cohan may be making their departure soon.
Lincoln is on record with telling ComicBook.com that he is ready for Grimes’ story to come to an end in a way he sees fit to the stories narrative.
The Walking Dead‘s ninth season will debut in the fall of this year, but (as of now) is not set to end in the coming season. When exactly the series will end is still unknown.
While The Walking Dead has stayed the course on the concept of humans being the main monsters to the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, a spin-off like Fear the Walking Dead is necessary to keep things (metaphorically) fresh. What if AMC decided to tackle The Walking Dead‘s zombie apocalypse during a blizzard, or during the duration of a northern winter? The Walking Dead producer Greg Nicotero is fond of this concept, which you can read more about in our article here!
