Ugh. The Weinsteins strike again. Last month, we told you about the upcoming releases of franchise reboot Amityville: The Awakening and the James Wan produced horror flick Demonic, both coming our way via TWC-Dimension. Amityville: The Awakening stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as a single mother who moves her family into the infamous house, and is predictably besieged by supernatural forces.
Frank Khalfoun (director of the well-received 2012 remake of Maniac) helmed this new installment, and the first trailers for the film were attached to the little-seen Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The intended release date for cinema’s next trip to Amitvyille was set to be January 3, 2015, but Bob and Harvey have now pulled the already completed project from the schedule.
Demonic was set to mark genre master James Wan’s return to horror, albeit only as a producer this time. Demonic stars Maria Bello (Prisoners) and Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy) as a psychologist and police detective respectively. The duo is tasked with investigating the brutal slayings of five college students inside a creepy abandoned house.
The few remaining survivors of the massacre reveal that the group were amateur ghost hunters, and decided to spend the night inside the purportedly haunted house in the hopes of witnessing paranormal activity. Needless to say, things went horribly, horribly wrong for all involved. Demonic was planned to hit theaters on December 12, 2014, but has also been indefinitely shelved.
TWC-Dimension has yet to offer an explanation for why Amityville: The Awakening and Demonic have been abruptly tossed aside, or if indeed the studio still has any plans to release either film any time in the forseeable future. We here at iHorror will continue to follow the story, and relay any updates as they become available.
