Man’s best friend knows no bounds. That is especially true when it comes to Courage, the adopted and intensely paranoid pup of Muriel and Eustace. The John R. Dilworth cartoon aired on Cartoon Network from 1999 to 2002 and was awesome the entire way through.
Courage the Cowardly Dog pretty much follows the same blueprint for all episodes. Some new form of evil comes to the farmhouse located in Nowhere to visit Eustance, Muriel and their trusty mutt. The Cowardly dog is always the only one that ever knows something is wrong. Spoilers, but he always manages to save the day. Of course, his attempts go unnoticed because Muriel and Eustace are usually oblivious to any of the constant creeping dangers.
The intro pretty much sets up the ubiquitous blueprint of the series:
We interrupt this program to bring you “Courage the Cowardly Dog” show, starring Courage, the cowardly dog! Abandoned as a pup, he was found by Muriel, who lives in the middle of Nowhere with her husband, Eustace Bagge. But creepy stuff happens in Nowhere. It’s up to Courage to save his new home!
Courage the Cowardly Dog really did have some scary villains in its rogues gallery. I have a nephew that was deathly afraid of Fred. For good reason too, this “naughty” dude looked absolutely terrifying with his rictus smile.
