A ‘Twister’ Reboot On Its Way From Universal

by Trey Hilburn III

1996’s storm-chasing, action-thrilller Twister is receiving a reboot over at Universal. The previous entry directed by Jan De Bont starred Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

This time around Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director, Joseph Kosinski is set to cause chaotic weather pandemonium.

The original Twister take was a perfect storm of box office elements. It starred both Hunt and Paxton and came out of Stephen Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. It also came about at a time in theatrical releases when disaster pictures were all the rage.

Twister was an event when released in theaters. People lined up to see, hear and feel Hollyood’s vision of tornadoes. The film was a major success with a $494.4 million global box office total.

The official Twister synopsis goes like this:

“Bill and Jo Harding, advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce, must join together to create an advanced weather alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.”

The whole spectacle was pretty exciting and its over the top nature and characters make it a film that still holds up for me.

The question now is do we need a remake of Twister in a world that is overrun with outlandish takes on disaster films? I mean, will the tornado have sharks inside?
